Flight disruptions can happen for all sorts of reasons - bad weather, technical issues, or air traffic control delays. Having recently been stranded overnight in Switzerland, I learned a few key lessons about handling these situations effectively.
As someone who travels as much as I possibly can, getting stuck overnight or diverted was going to happen at some point! So it's best to be prepared.
When a delay is announced, it's tempting to wander off for food or find somewhere more comfortable to sit. However, it's important to stay near the gate.
Airline staff often give updates in person before they appear on apps or email. If you're not nearby, you could miss vital instructions about rebooking, compensation, or accommodation.

2. Be Aware of Duty-Free Liquid Restrictions 🛍️
Liquids over 100ml usually won't be allowed through, even if they're sealed in a bag. Some airports provide a transit security bag to get around this, but it's not guaranteed. If possible, return items for a refund before leaving the departure area. Otherwise, you may have to leave them behind.

3. You'll Need to Re-Enter the Country 🛂
Even though you haven't gone anywhere, immigration officers will direct you to arrivals before you can proceed to rebook your flight or collect hotel vouchers. Be prepared for potential queues, especially if multiple flights have been delayed.

4. Be Patient and Polite with Airline Staff 🙂
Staying polite and patient makes a big difference. Most of the time, you'll need to head back to the check-in desks to arrange accommodation or meal vouchers. This can take time, but let the airline sort things before booking your own hotel. They are responsible for covering reasonable expenses, so rushing ahead could cost you.
5. Pack Spare Clothes and Essentials 👕
Always pack a spare t-shirt, underwear, socks, and a small toiletries kit, even for a short trip or Extreme Day Trip.
6. Bring a Phone Charger and Power Bank 🔋
Carry a charger, power bank, and the correct plug adapter for your destination. You'll also want to be able to recharge your power bank potentially which may need different cables so bring those along too.
Airport charging stations are often overcrowded or don't even work, so having your own backup power will keep you connected without stress.

Many workplaces rely on company phones for communication, so if yours is at home, you could be stuck. One option is to bring your work phone turned off to avoid roaming charges, or at least have key contact details written down in case you need them to let someone know. Many of us travel at weekends to save on using annual leave but if you are delayed home you don't have much choice.

8. Have a Backup Plan for Pets and Family 🐕
Having a plan in place will reduce stress if the unexpected happens. Whether it's arranging an extra night of childcare or making sure someone can walk the dog, thinking ahead will make any disruption easier to handle.
9. Check the Airline App for Updates 📱
If your flight is postponed rather than cancelled, expect the new departure time to be around 11-12 hours later, as crew need a minimum rest period. However, this isn't guaranteed, so keep an eye on notifications and emails for real-time updates as a new crew might be available sooner to get you home.
10. Claim Compensation and Expenses 💰
Even if compensation doesn't apply, airlines must cover reasonable hotel and meal costs if you're stranded overnight. Keep all receipts and submit a claim via the airline's official process to recover expenses.
The airline will often arrange accommodation for you and you need to give them a reasonable opportunity to do so before sorting yourself out. If you are told to book your own accommodation you need to aim for 3* or less, it's not reasonable to book a 5* hotel suite.
11. Bring Additional Medication 💊
I've read about plenty of people who have had flights cancelled and were worrying about running out, this applies to any length of trip.

12. Extend Your Airport Parking 🚗
Many airport parking providers allow you to extend online, but some require a phone call. Check your booking confirmation for details. Leaving it too late could mean paying inflated fees when you return.

Final Thoughts ✈️
Flight delays are never ideal, but a bit of preparation can make a huge difference. Having a change of clothes, a backup plan for home, and knowing how to handle duty-free purchases can help you manage the situation calmly.
Next time you travel, consider packing for the unexpected, it could turn an overnight delay from a nightmare into a manageable inconvenience.
Safe travels!
